At first, the electric vehicles are missing, then the infrastructure. What happens if what follows is a lack of grid capacity needed to connect the necessary charging infrastructure? That’s when battery storage comes to the rescue. Through peak shaving, the storage unit virtually expands the connection capacity and enables the operation of one or more fast charging stations on the low-voltage grid.
Electromobility plays a decisive role in the context of climate change and the resulting energy transition. The quick charging of vehicles in particular causes high electricity load peaks, which require an expensive grid connection and otherwise run the risk of overloading the supply networks. By using a compact battery storage system, these load peaks can be absorbed and, in some cases, make electromobility possible in the first place – even far away from a highly developed grid infrastructure. At the commuter parking lot at Westkreuz in Oldenburg, we installed a battery storage unit to provide the necessary charging infrastructure. This storage facility was commissioned by EWE Go, which as a wholly-owned EWE subsidiary bundles all issues related to electromobility within the EWE Group, for end consumers and in particular commuters at Oldenburg’s Westkreuz interchange. Network-wise, the battery storage system will be connected in parallel to the utility grid. Thus, the downstream charging stations can be supplied from the power supply network, the battery storage, or a combination of both energy sources. Scalability – The system is modularly expandable: the storage cabinet can be expanded to a capacity of up to 76 kWh. In case the capacity or power is still not sufficient in the further expansion stages of electromobility, additional storage cabinets can be installed and operated in parallel.
