Going against the grain – earning money with atypical behavior
Due to its early working hours, a bakery already behaves differently from most other grid customers, but sometimes that is not enough to have the grid operator reward the difference. With battery storage and the achievement of atypical grid usage, the Musswessels bakery is able to react flexibly even to varying peak load time windows without having to cut back.
Electricity prices are rising almost continuously and represent one of the main cost factors in the production process for many companies. To optimize electricity procurement and the resulting higher economic efficiency for commercial customers, we have installed a battery storage system at the Rhede location. Musswessels is a large bakery that supplies more than 75 specialist bakeries and consumes 700 MWh of electricity per year.
The battery storage is installed via a sub-distribution board in a technical room of the bakery. In terms of grid topology, the battery storage is connected parallel to the supply grid<7u>. Major conversion measures were not necessary for this. The system realizes atypical grid usage here as follows: The battery storage discharges during times of high grid load and recharges when the supply grid is less loaded. This grid-supportive behavior enables, among other things, the integration of regenerative generation plants and is rewarded by the grid operator with particularly high cost reductions. The customer’s production process can continue to be operated without restrictions.
Scalability – The system can be used flexibly due to the use of different cabinet sizes. In addition, several storage cabinets can be coupled so that the overall system can be expanded modularly.
