Battery storage project for 240 electric buses of HOCHBAHN Hamburg
be.storaged supported HOCHBAHN Hamburg in the planning and implementation of a 4 MWh LFP battery storage system to support the charging infrastructure for 240 electric buses. The project was part of the “KoLa” research initiative with Stromnetz Hamburg and two universities.
At the depot of Hamburger HOCHBAHN AG, numerous buses need to be charged simultaneously within a short period of time.
Without intelligent energy management, this could result in high grid fees and grid overloads.
At be.storaged, we realized the battery energy storage system (BESS) with 4.6 MWh capacity and 4 MW power. The LFP storage is container-based, connected to the 20 kV grid and is controlled by our energy management system okean.
The system cuts peak loads, optimizesself-consumption and enables economical market participation. It is scalable for grid services and load management.
In this way, HOCHBAHN increases its energy autonomy, reduces costs and reduces CO₂ emissions.
The project is the first large-scale battery storage system at an electric bus depot in Germany – a milestone for the energy and transport transition.
